FACULTY: What is the Active Learning Classroom and how can I schedule my class there?

Summary

Discover what the Active Learning Classroom is and how to request the room for your classes.

Body

The Active Learning Classroom (ALC), located in Moakley 131, is a purpose-built environment supporting the integration of active learning pedagogies into course instruction.

This space is designed to empower students through collaborative, participatory, and constructivist learning strategies such as brainstorming, role-playing, content creation, and group presentations.

🧠 Instructional Philosophy

The ALC encourages:

  • Student engagement and collaboration

  • Increased learning comprehension

  • Reduced DWF (Drop, Withdraw, Fail) rates

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and student success

Through active learning design, students become co-creators in the learning experience—not just passive recipients.

🛠️ Classroom Features

The room includes both digital and analog tools for flexibility in instructional methods:

  • Interactive digital whiteboards

  • Rolling analog whiteboards

  • Mobile desks and chairs for easy reconfiguration

  • Standing desks to support active instruction

  • Large touchscreen displays for presentations and group work

  • Zoom Room display for web conferencing or hybrid classes

  • ADA-compliant teaching station

📦 Additionally, 12 storage lockers (across the hall) are available for storing teaching materials between sessions. (Bring your own lock.)

🔍 Feedback-Driven Design

A key part of this initiative is to gather feedback from faculty and students about which tools and layouts best support active learning.
This input helps inform future upgrades and classroom designs at BSU.
