MFA: How to Add a YubiKey or FIDO Key as an MFA Method (Windows 11)

These are instructions on how to add a YubiKey (5C NFC) security key as a multi-factor authentication (MFA) method to your account.  You will need a device which has a USB-C port in order to complete the process.  These instructions were written in Windows 11 using Microsoft Edge browser.

  1. Open a browser on a device with USB-C port and go to https://aka.ms/mfasetup
  2. Sign in with BSU credentials (you may skip to step 6 if you don't see the next screen)
  3. Click Next at Let's keep your account secure screen

  4. Click Skip setup at Keep your account secure screen

  5. Check Don't show this again box and click Yes at Stay Signed in? screen

  6. At the Security info screen, click Add sign-in method

  7. Click the drop-down menu, choose Security key, and click Add

  8. At the Security Key screen, select USB device, and click Next

  9. At the Windows Security screen, select Security key and click Next

  10. Click OKOK, and insert the YubiKey to a USB-C port

  11. Create a PIN which you can remember, four digit minimum, and click OK

  12. Touch the golden circle on the YubiKey twice, and click OK

  13. Give the key a name, click Next, and click Done
