ALL USERS: How to Check Your Operating System (OS) and Browser Version

Overview

Knowing your device’s operating system and browser version is important for troubleshooting, compatibility checks, and ensuring security. This guide walks you through how to find that information on both Windows and Mac computers, as well as major web browsers.

 

1. Check OS Version

 

Windows 10/11:

  1. Click the Start Menu.

  2. Type “About your PC” and select the result.

  3. Under Windows specifications, find:

    • Edition

    • Version

    • OS build

 

macOS:

  1. Click the Apple Menu () in the top-left corner.

  2. Select About This Mac.

  3. A window will appear showing:

    • macOS name (e.g., Sonoma, Ventura)

    • Version number (e.g., 14.4.1)

 

2. Check Browser Version

 

Google Chrome:

  1. Open Chrome.

  2. Click the three dots in the top-right corner.

  3. Go to Help > About Google Chrome.

  4. Version number will appear at the top of the page.

 

Microsoft Edge:

  1. Open Edge.

  2. Click the three dots in the top-right corner.

  3. Go to Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge.

  4. Your version will be displayed.

 

Mozilla Firefox:

  1. Open Firefox.

  2. Click the three horizontal lines (menu) in the top-right.

  3. Go to Help > About Firefox.

  4. A window will show your current version.

 

Safari (macOS only):

  1. Open Safari.

  2. Click Safari in the top menu bar.

  3. Select About Safari.

  4. A small popup will display the version number.

 

Why It Matters

  • Some software requires specific OS or browser versions.

  • Security updates and new features depend on the version you’re using.
