What it is
Personal Attendant is an AI voice agent that answers incoming Teams Phone calls on your behalf. Microsoft's documentation refers to the same feature as Copilot Call Delegation. It screens the caller, asks why they are calling, routes urgent calls to you, sends likely spam to voicemail, and can book a follow-up meeting when you are unavailable. You are notified whenever it acts, and a summary appears in your call history afterward. Callers hear a disclosure that they are speaking with an automated attendant rather than a person.
Who can use it
Anyone at BSU with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. The feature is currently in Microsoft's Frontier early access program, so behavior and menu labels may change without notice.
How to turn it on
- In Teams, select Settings and more (the three dots at the top of the app), then Settings, then Calls.
- Under Manage Personal Attendant, click Manage.
- Toggle Enable Personal Attendant to On.
Recommended settings
Screen external calls only and leave internal calls unscreened, so colleagues reach you directly. Turn on spam filtering. Use the priority access list to exempt specific callers from screening. Configure your follow-up availability before allowing it to schedule meetings.
Important cautions
- Enabling Personal Attendant replaces your existing call routing settings. Review any call forwarding or delegate configuration first.
- Desktop (Windows and Mac) and web only. Not available in the Teams mobile apps.
- English only. Requires your Teams app language be set to English.
- Recording and transcription of screened calls is a user-controlled setting. Departments handling sensitive or confidential calls should consider leaving it off.
Known limitations
Your presence status is ignored; screening follows your settings only. Live preview is unavailable when recording and transcription are off. Post-call summaries are not generated if the caller hangs up early. Tenant-wide usage is capped, and if the cap is reached, calls fall back to normal routing or voicemail.
