Body
OpenAI is retiring custom GPTs in ChatGPT and replacing them with plugins. This applies to all ChatGPT plans, including BSU's ChatGPT for Business.
Note: The instructions below may work for all OpenAI ChatGPT plans, but they are specifically designed for updating ChatGPT for Business plans.
Plugins work much like GPTs and can only be shared with BSU members who also have a ChatGPT for Business plan.
Each GPT must be migrated by its creator before the retirement date to preserve access to its features. Here are some key dates:
- October 26, 2026: New custom GPTs can no longer be created. Existing GPTs continue to work.
- December 11, 2026: Custom GPTs stop working and are removed.
Note: Some Enterprise workspaces with an approved extension may have until February 11, 2027. Plan for December 11 unless BSU IT tells you otherwise.
Before You Migrate
- Finish edits: Make sure your GPT's instructions and reference files are final. You can edit your GPT now, before migrating, or migrate first and edit the plugin afterward (see Edit Your Plugin or Add Reference Files below).
- Publish changes: Migration only uses the GPT's latest published version. If your GPT has never been published, or you made changes after publishing, click Publish with access set to Only me. If your GPT is already published and you haven't changed it since, you do not need to republish it.
- Migrate: Select Migrate to plugin. Your instructions become a private skill and your files become reference files.
- Use privately: Your new plugin is ready for your own use in ChatGPT for Business without being shared with anyone else.
Find My GPTs
1. Sign in to ChatGPT for Business with your BSU account.
2. In the left sidebar, click the "..." icon, and select GPTs (or Explore GPTs).

3. Select My GPTs to see the GPTs you created.

Migrating GPT to Plugin
Prerequisite: Only the GPT's creator or a workspace admin can migrate a GPT. Use the ChatGPT for Business account where the GPT was created.
1. Open My GPTs (see Find My GPTs above).
2. If your GPT is unpublished or has unpublished changes, open it, click Publish, and leave access set to Only me. Skip this step if the GPT is already published with no new changes.
3. Select the GPT you wish to migrate and then click Migrate to plugin. In the example below, Article Buddy is selected to migrate.

4. Review the checks, then click "Migrate to plugin".

5. Click "Try in chat" to test it.

Note: Drafts and unpublished edits do not transfer. After migrating, the original GPT becomes read-only, so make any further changes in the plugin. Your instructions become a skill and your knowledge files become reference files in the plugin. Custom Actions, the selected model, and sharing settings do not carry over. Your past conversations with the GPT stay in your chat history, even after retirement.
Edit Your Plugin or Add Reference Files
After migrating, make all future changes inside the plugin. You can edit a plugin by asking Plugin Creator in a chat.
- In a new chat, type @Plugin Creator, then mention your plugin with @ followed by its name.
- To add or replace a reference file, click + or Files and attach the document.
- Name the file or behavior to change, explain what you want, and what should stay the same.
- Send the message and review the plugin's updated instructions and files.
Example request:
@Plugin Creator Edit @[plugin name] to add the attached [file name] as a reference file. Use it when [describe when to use it]. Keep the other reference files and instructions unchanged. Tell me what you changed.
Note: To replace an outdated file, name the old file and explain how the new one should be used. Otherwise, the plugin may keep both versions and could still use the old one. Only upload files that are appropriate for everyone you plan to share the plugin with. People who use a shared plugin may see content from its reference files.
Share Your Plugin with BSU Members
Prerequisite: You can only share a plugin with BSU members who have a ChatGPT for Business plan. It cannot be shared with anyone outside BSU's ChatGPT for Business, including BSU members who only have an individual ChatGPT account (Free, Plus, or other personal plans).
Your plugin is private by default, so only you can use it. If you wish to share it with others, follow these steps:
- Test the plugin to make sure it works as expected.
- Open the plugin's sharing settings and choose who in the BSU workspace can access it.
- Ask one member to install and test the plugin.
- Tell everyone who used your GPT where to find the plugin.
Note: Sharing settings from your GPT do not carry over. Even if your GPT was shared with the whole workspace, no one else can use the plugin until you share it. Depending on workspace settings, sharing may require permission from a workspace admin.
