MFA: How to Re-configure Multi-Factor (MFA) with a New Phone

Body

If your account is configured for multi-factor authentication (MFA) and you have a new phone, you may or may not have to do anything depending on the applicable scenario below.  These scenarios assume you still have the old device with you to help transition to the new device.

If you no longer have the old device with you, please contact the IT Service Center at (508) 531-2555 or email itsupport@bridgew.edu.  An administrator needs to reset your MFA and revoke any saved MFA sessions on your account.  After that, the system will guide you to re-configure MFA the next time you sign in to your account.

Scenarios Actions to Take

1. New phone, same number, using SMS text or phone call as MFA method

No actions needed as new phone will continue to receive SMS text/phone call

2. New phone, same number, using Microsoft Authenticator app as MFA method

Install Microsoft Authenticator app on new phone > from a computer, go to https://aka.ms/mfasetup and add a new "Authenticator app" method. Once your new phone is added, delete the old authenticator method.

3. New phone, new number, using SMS text or phone call as MFA method

4. New phone, new number, using Microsoft Authenticator app as MFA method
