MFA: Migrating SMS to Authenticator App and Passkey

Microsoft is ending support for SMS and voice authentication by February 1, 2027. These instructions will guide you on how to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app and passkey to protect your account from bad actors. You will need a computer plus your smartphone to complete the process. Also, Bluetooth needs to be enabled on both computer and smartphone for passkey to work properly.

1. On your smartphone, install the Microsoft Authenticator app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store

2. On your computer, open a web browser and go to https://aka.ms/mfasetup

3. Log in with your BSU credentials

4. Click the + Add sign-in method button and select Microsoft Authenticator

5. Click Next on Install Microsoft Authenticator page, but leave it on Set up your account in app page

6. On your smartphone, open the Microsoft Authenticator app, Accept the privacy agreement, tap Scan a QR code or tap the + (plus sign) icon in the top right corner

7. Choose Work or school account, allow camera and notifications when prompted

8. Back to the computer, click Next on Set up your account in app page to display the QR code
