Prerequisites
ChatGPT Add-ins require a paid OpenAI license. This article shows BSU members with an IT-provisioned ChatGPT for Business license how to install the ChatGPT add-ins to Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. OpenAI does not currently list an official ChatGPT add-in for Microsoft Word.
Access is limited to IT-provisioned paid accounts. Free accounts and individually purchased subscriptions are not approved for BSU business operations. Installing an add-in does not create or activate a paid membership. To obtain a ChatGPT for Business account, see ALL EMPLOYEES: How do I get a ChatGPT paid license?.
How to add ChatGPT to PowerPoint
- Open PowerPoint and sign in with your BSU credentials if you're not already logged in. Open a new or existing presentation.
- Select Add-ins on the ribbon and search for ChatGPT. If ChatGPT does not appear, select More Add-ins and search for ChatGPT again. Locate ChatGPT, described as supporting Excel and PowerPoint. Open its details to confirm the publisher is OpenAI.

- Select Add and open the ChatGPT panel.

- Select Continue with ChatGPT when prompted.
- Sign into your ChatGPT for Business account. See how to sign in for log in instructions. If asked to choose a workspace, select the ChatGPT for Business workspace.
- Complete the on-screen setup and return to PowerPoint. Enter a request in the ChatGPT panel, then review any changes to your presentation for accuracy; AI can make mistakes.
Note: Paid memberships are still subject to usage limits. If a limit message appears, follow the guidance shown in the add-in. Contact itsupport@bridgew.edu if the add-in does not recognize your credentials.
How to add ChatGPT to Excel
- Open Excel and sign in with your BSU credentials. Open a workbook.
- Select Add-ins on the ribbon and search for ChatGPT. Locate ChatGPT, described as supporting Excel and PowerPoint. Open its details to confirm the publisher is OpenAI.

3. Select Add and open the ChatGPT panel.

- Select Continue with ChatGPT. Sign in with your BSU credentials to your IT-provisioned ChatGPT for Business license. If asked to choose a workspace, select the ChatGPT for Business workspace.
- Complete the on-screen setup and return to Excel. Enter a request in the ChatGPT panel, then review any changes to your workbook for accuracy; AI can make mistakes.
Note: Paid memberships are still subject to usage limits. If a limit message appears, follow the guidance shown in the add-in. Contact itsupport@bridgew.edu if the add-in does not recognize your assigned membership.
If you cannot access your paid account or add-in
If you can’t access your ChatGPT for Business plan, check that you signed in using the BSU Single Sign On option (see ALL EMPLOYEES: How do I Log into ChatGPT for Business?). If the browser is signed into a different account, sign out and restart the add-in sign-in process.
If Add-ins is missing, installation requests administrator approval, or your paid membership is still unavailable, contact BSU IT at itsupport@bridgew.edu for help. Include the Office app, AI service, and error message.
If you reach a usage limit, follow the guidance displayed by the service.
When used with your BSU ChatGPT Business account, the add-ins are covered by OpenAI’s business data privacy commitments, including no model training on business data by default. Additional handling applies within Microsoft Office: Microsoft’s terms also apply, and OpenAI’s Excel documentation states that some data logs may be retained for 30 days for safety and integrity. The PowerPoint documentation confirms that data handling follows your ChatGPT plan and workspace settings, plus Microsoft’s add-in terms.
