Your computer name is a unique identifier used by IT to locate your specific machine on the network. You may be asked to provide it when requesting remote support, reporting a hardware issue, or submitting a ticket.
Windows
Choose any one of the methods below.
Method 1: Settings (Recommended)
- Click the Start menu or the Search box on the taskbar.
- Type About and select About your PC.
- Your computer name is listed next to Device name at the top of the page.
Method 2: This PC
- Open File Explorer (or find This PC on your desktop).
- Right-click This PC and choose Properties.
- The About screen will open. Your computer name is listed next to Device name.
Method 3: Command Prompt
- Press the Windows key, type cmd, and press Enter.
- At the prompt, type
hostname and press Enter.
- Your computer name will be displayed on the next line.
Mac
Choose either method below.
Method 1: System Settings (Recommended)
- Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of the screen.
- Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions of macOS).
- Click General, then click About.
- On older versions of macOS, click Sharing instead — the computer name is at the top of that window.
- Your computer name is listed next to Name.
Method 2: Terminal
- Open Terminal (press Command + Space, type Terminal, and press Return).
- Type
scutil --get ComputerName and press Return.
- Your computer name will be displayed on the next line.
What to Send to IT
When submitting a ticket or asking for remote support, please include the full computer name exactly as shown (for example, BDNITEC7464LT). This helps us connect to the correct machine on the first try.
