How to Find the Computer Name

Your computer name is a unique identifier used by IT to locate your specific machine on the network. You may be asked to provide it when requesting remote support, reporting a hardware issue, or submitting a ticket.

Windows

Choose any one of the methods below.

Method 1: Settings (Recommended)

  1. Click the Start menu or the Search box on the taskbar.
  2. Type About and select About your PC.
  3. Your computer name is listed next to Device name at the top of the page.

Method 2: This PC

  1. Open File Explorer (or find This PC on your desktop).
  2. Right-click This PC and choose Properties.
  3. The About screen will open. Your computer name is listed next to Device name.

Method 3: Command Prompt

  1. Press the Windows key, type cmd, and press Enter.
  2. At the prompt, type hostname and press Enter.
  3. Your computer name will be displayed on the next line.

Mac

Choose either method below.

Method 1: System Settings (Recommended)

  1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of the screen.
  2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions of macOS).
  3. Click General, then click About.
    • On older versions of macOS, click Sharing instead — the computer name is at the top of that window.
  4. Your computer name is listed next to Name.

Method 2: Terminal

  1. Open Terminal (press Command + Space, type Terminal, and press Return).
  2. Type scutil --get ComputerName and press Return.
  3. Your computer name will be displayed on the next line.

What to Send to IT

When submitting a ticket or asking for remote support, please include the full computer name exactly as shown (for example, BDNITEC7464LT). This helps us connect to the correct machine on the first try.
