Error message Your Account Doesn't Allow Editing on a Mac - Office 365 Error

ISSUE:

After installing Office 365 apps on a personally owned Mac some users get an error that says:

View Only. Your account doesn't allow editing on a Mac. To learn more, contact your admin about your Office plan

 

Check macOS and system requirements

1. Verify the Mac meets Microsoft's System Requirements

2. If necessary, check macOS version and patch level to verify it is as up-to-date as it can be and adheres to Microsoft's outlines, as linked above.  Update as outlined and reboot as needed.

 

If the Mac is up-to-date and meets Microsoft's system requirements, check the following:

Verify that you are using the proper account: 

  1. Click "Use Another Account" and sign in with your email address and Microsoft password:
  2. Alternately, click the "Activate" button and sign in with your credentials.

If that doesn’t work you can try un-installing office for Mac completely then re-install and re-activate office.
