Creating a Free ChatGPT (generative AI) Account

This KB article explains how to sign-up for the free version of ChatGPT, a generative AI frontier large language model. BSU encourages the campus community to purchase a ChatGPT for Business license over using a free individual account to obtain greater features and data protections. BSU does not have an enterprise-level ChatGPT subscription like we do for Microsoft Copilot (see Copilot instructions) and Google Gemini (see Gemini instructions). Use BSU enterprise-level accounts when you are working with large amounts of data, require greater privacy protections and security, need more model features or more recent models, and seek fewer daily message limits.

When working with institutional data, use Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 (see policy). 

If you plan to use your ChatGPT account for any BSU-related business, then use your BSU email to set up the account as described below.

Steps to creating a ChatGPT free individual account

1. Go to chatgpt.com and click the Sign up for free button in the upper right corner.

2. At the log in screen, select Continue with Google. 

b) Enter your BSU email address

c) You will be prompted to log into BSU. 

d) Enter a verification code sent to your BSU email address, if applicable.
