App Blocked by Windows Defender Application Control

Overview

Your device is protected by Windows Defender Application Control, a security feature that only allows trusted and approved applications to run.

If an application is not recognized as trusted or does not meet our security standards, it will be blocked automatically.

What You Might See

When an app is blocked, you may receive a message similar to the screenshot below:

“Your organization used Windows Defender Application Control to block this app”

Why This Happens

Applications may be blocked for one or more of the following reasons:

  • The app is unapproved or not required for business use
  • It is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA)
  • The app may:
    • Modify browser or system settings
    • Bundle with other software
    • Inject advertisements
    • Collect data without clear consent
  • The application does not meet organizational security standards

These controls help protect your device and university data from security threats.

Next Steps

  • If you do not need the application, no action is required
  • If you believe the application is needed for work:
    1. Submit a request to the IT Service Desk
    2. Include:
      • Application name
      • Business justification
      • Screenshot of the error (if possible)
