FACULTY: What do I do if I suspect a student is using AI irresponsibly?

As of now, there are no reliable AI detection tools available. The Teaching & Technology Center (TTC) strongly advises faculty not to rely on commercial products claiming to detect AI-generated content.

That said, there are proactive steps you can take to promote academic integrity and reduce potential misuse of generative AI.

🧾 Start with a Clear AI Policy in Your Syllabus

Many students are genuinely unsure about what constitutes acceptable use of AI. An explicit course policy can help clarify expectations and prevent misunderstandings.

🗣️ If You Suspect AI Misuse: Engage the Student

If you suspect that a student has violated your AI policy, we recommend the following approach:

  • Invite the student to a conversation to discuss the assignment.

  • Ask the student to explain their thought process or how they arrived at their submission.

  • Reinforce the value of mastering course content without overreliance on AI.

  • Discuss the purpose of the assignment and how it connects to learning goals.

  • If appropriate, review your institution’s policies on academic integrity and consequences.
