This KB article will demonstrate how to set up the AI Conversations feature on Blackboard Ultra. This feature allows educators to create AI led conversations around a topic or scenario to engage students. AI Conversations includes Socratic questioning (available now) and role play exercises (coming soon). Students can also explore and reflect on their own thoughts or experiences with the AI Conversation. Visit Blackboard’s Help site to learn more.
Tips When Using the AI Design Assistant:
-
The more information you provide in your descriptions, the more likely you’ll see accurate and salient AI generated content.
-
Always check AI generated content for accuracy and appropriateness.
-
You can make edits to all AI generated content as well as reject part or all of its output.
Instructions for AI Conversations:
Step 1
In the Course Content page, click on the plus (+) icon and select Create.
Step 2
Scroll down to Participation and Engagement and select AI Conversation.
Step 3
Here you can enter:
-
A Topic of conversation: This is where you can enter a question for students to think about and discuss with the AI persona.
-
A Persona for the AI: This is where you can give the AI a personality, image, a name, and select the complexity of responses. (Complexity refers to learners’ educational levels. A complexity level of 7 will typically meet the target ranges for undergraduate lower division, 8 for undergraduate upper division, and 9 for Master and early Ph.D levels per this guide).
-
The Reflection Question: This can be edited (Note: You must first save the AI Conversation Topic and Persona information to be able to edit this). Click the ellipsis (...) next to the question and select Edit to create your own reflection question. You can also make the reflection question extra credit by selecting the check-box next to Extra credit.
Step 4
After you enter the required information, select the black Save button to add the new AI Conversation to your Course Content page. You can also Preview chat to ensure that it is appropriate and accurate for students.
Step 5 (Optional)
If you wish, you can make these AI Conversations a graded assignment by selecting the gear icon next to "AI Conversation Settings" and customizing the settings to best suit your needs.
