FACULTY: Bb Original: Exporting a Blackboard Course as a Common Cartridge (LMS-Compatible Format)

If you need to move your course materials from Blackboard to another Learning Management System (LMS), the most efficient way is to export the course as a Common Cartridge package. This will generate a .zip file that can be imported into other LMS platforms that support Common Cartridge (such as Canvas, Moodle, and D2L).

Steps to Export a Blackboard Course as a Common Cartridge

  1. Log into Blackboard and navigate to the Course Management section in the left-hand menu.
  2. Click Packages and Utilities > Export/Archive Course.
  3. Click the Export Course button.
  4. Under File Type, select Common Cartridge Format (.zip).
  5. Choose the content areas you want to include in the export (e.g., assignments, discussions, files, etc.).
  6. Click Submit to start the export process.
  7. Once the export is complete, you'll receive an email notification. Return to the Export/Archive Course page, and click the download link for the .zip file.
  8. Save the .zip file to your computer. This file can now be uploaded into another LMS that supports Common Cartridge imports.

Note: The exported file will not include user data such as student submissions or grades. Only course content is preserved.
