How to Install the Office Suite from the Office 365 Portal

All active students, faculty, and staff get access to five installations of the Microsoft Office Suite for personal use. These directions are for installing the Microsoft Office suite on your personal computer. For all faculty or staff who are looking to install Office on your BSU-provided computer, please submit a request for assistance on our Software Applications service page so a technician can help.

Requirements: Your device must have at least Windows 10 or a recent MacOS (the current OS and the two previous versions are supported). For further system requirements information see: Office 365 System Requirements for PC and Office 365 System Requirements for macOS.

Note: If you find another version of Office on the device, you must uninstall it from the control panel and restart the computer before installing Office 365.

To download and install the Office Suite, do the following:

  1. Go to https://portal.office.com
  2. Log in with your BSU email and password on the sign on-page
  3. Click on the Install Office Apps (or Install Office) button at the upper right of the page
  4. From the drop-down menu, select Office 365 apps from the options.
  5. The file to install Office downloads and the on-screen instructions tell you how to find/select the download and run the file.
  6. Upon running the file, an installer comes up and installs the Office Suite. Administrator privileges may be required.  If prompted, enter your computer-specific username and password (what you use to log on to the computer). Follow the on-screen instructions to install Office.
  7. You may need to sign in to your BSU account after launching one of the Office Programs in order to activate the software.  If not prompted:
    • Launch one of the newly installed programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
    • Go to File
    • Click Account
    • Click Sign In
    • Use your full BSU Email address (for example, bbear@student.bridgew.edu) when prompted for an account.
    • Select Work or School Account
    • Log in with your BSU Email and password
    • Uncheck the box asking for permission to Administer the program on this device - If you don't uncheck this, it will not activate properly.
    • Activation completes, and a confirmation appears
