FACULTY: ULTRA: How do I create learning modules using the AI Design Assistant?

The AI Design Assistant can save you time by auto-generating course content that you can later edit to ensure accuracy and relevance. This KB article will get you started with generating learning modules and their accompanying images.

Tips When Using the AI Design Assistant:

  • The more information you provide in your descriptions, the more likely you’ll see accurate and salient AI generated content.
  • Always check AI generated content for accuracy and appropriateness.
  • You can make edits to all AI generated content as well as reject part or all of its output.

Instructions for AI-Generated Learning Modules:

The AI Design Assistant can generate learning modules in empty courses as well as in courses with existing content.

Step 1:

In an empty course, select Auto-Generate Modules.

In a course with existing content, use the Create Item menu to access the Auto-Generate Modules option

  • Place your mouse where you would like the new learning module to be located. A horizontal purple line will appear with a plus (+) sign.
  • Click the plus (+) sign to see a drop-down menu that contains an option to Auto-Generate Modules.

Step 2:

Once you click on Auto-Generate Modules, the AI Design Assistant will immediately begin to generate content.

You have several ways to customize the learning modules that the AI Design Assistant generates.

  • Enter a description to narrow the focus of the modules. The more specific you are the better the results will be. Consider inserting the learning outcomes for each module in the Description.
  • Select course content to determine modules.
  • Select a prefix for the module titles.
  • Choose whether to include AI-generated images for the modules.
  • Adjust the complexity of the modules’ focus. (Complexity refers to learners’ educational levels. A complexity level of 7 will typically meet the target ranges for undergraduate lower division, 8 for undergraduate upper division, and 9 for Master and early Ph.D levels per this guide).
  • Select the number of modules to generate.

If you customized the learning modules during the auto-generating process, simply click the black Generate button to restart the generative process for more relevant results that reflect the customizations you entered.

Step 3:

Select which of the generated modules you’d like to add to your course. Click the black Add to Course button in the lower right to save those modules to your course.

Step 4:

Determine what editing is required for the generated learning modules. To edit learning modules, click on the 3 ellipses to the right of the learning module and select Edit.

Step 5 (optional):

Edit or generate new images for learning modules

  • Click on the 3 ellipses to the right of the learning module and select Edit.
  • The editor box will open from which you can click the Image icon.

  • Click the Drop-down menu in the Insert image window. You may upload an existing image you have saved to your device, search for a stock image in Ultra's Unsplash collection, or you can use generative AI to generate an image.

  • To use Generative AI to create an image, select Generate images and the AI Assistant will generate several images. To obtain more specific results, enter a description for an image as shown below. You may repeatedly click Generate for a new round of images until you see one you like.

  • You can then zoom and drag the image to your liking.
  • Lastly, click the black Save button.
